When Sig made the announcement regarding the GSR 1911 I was very excited. Sig quality in a 1911 package with all of the tactical bells and whistles. I almost went out and bought one sight unseen. Boy am I glad I didn't make that mistake.Sig got into the 1911 business about the same time as Smith and Wesson. The market was there, the line was available and popular. It just seemed like the perfect fit. Sig currently has a number of 1911 models, but the GSR was the first.
The GSR is a full size 1911 with a 5" barrel and an integral rail system. It is a very pretty gun with all of the tactical accessories required in today's market. So why didn't I like it? First of all the trigger.
This isn't a true custom shop gun, but it's supposed to as close as you can get from the real thing. With that said I would expect a solid trigger, but this one had to be one of the worst I have felt on a 1911 pistol. Just prior to breaking it had a significant catch that ruined the entire trigger pull. Even a novice shooter could feel the sand in this trigger. The other problem was the speed bump.
A speed bump is the protrusion at the base of the beaver tail grip safety and it's designed to give a physical reminder to the shooter of proper grip. I have fired several guns with a speed bump and you usually don't even know they exist. The moment I started doing speed drills and double taps the speed bump started digging into the palm of my hand so forcefully that it left a significant mark for several minutes after shooting. It actually hurt to shoot the gun.
Needless to say I can't recommend the GSR 1911 based on my experience. It may be that the model I fired had some issues that are not found on other examples, but then I'm just being nice. I wont be standing in line for this one.
I am really not sure your review can be taken as anything other than incomplete. Clearly you had a malfunction with the trigger, but come on the speed-bump SAFETY hurt you because it protruded to much? Sound like you were not gripping it correctly since when gripped correctly it goes flush.
ReplyDeleteYou failed to mention, which model you tested, how many rounds you shot, how many before it failed, what type of rounds, what distance and your groupings. And any discussion of retest after the gun was fixed.
If your only review is a cowboy style quick draw you are doing your review, your readers and the gun itself a disservice.
How can anyone consider this a valid review of an entire product line?
Quick Review: Sig Arms Revolution Full Size Nitron (no manhole cover/REVOLUTION stamped on slide)
ReplyDeleteThe trigger is a little loose. I have owned/shot one for 2 years now. (Sig GSR Revo Nitron Full Size w/Rail like photo) The speed bump does hurt and no, it does not go flush. If you owned one you would know that. Put about 200 hundred round through it and see how sore your hand is.
However, the model is one of the newer ones, did have problems when first got it. Many fail to feed/extracts. Sent it back to factory, got it back less than week later, works great now. They told me extractor was too tight. From speaking to the tech on phone, he knew what it was right away, so it seemed to me to be a common problem. It will put a bullet anywhere you aim it, everytime. It is sick, disgusting, something fierce accurate. Have put about 2,000 or so rounds downrange. Works well with Chip mags. The mags it comes with are garbage. Save those for trade ins.
All that being said, if you are looking for a gun to play with, it's not bad. Mine is very durable, (a shooting brick)and reliable now. I personally am going to trade mine when I get back to the states for something I can have more piece of mind with.
If you looking for a 1911 to throw much lead down range, this is a good gun (wear padded gloves?) However, if you don't make a ton of money for gun fun, I would suggest spending it on something more reliable. Kimbers are very comfortable to shoot with their nice curved backstraps, I have always had good luck with them. FYI: Going to trade Sig for a Wilson/NightHawk/Supergun 1911 to keep forever.
Note: Keep in mind you are on the internet, most people "review" guns they have never fired or even touched and EVERY product line and gun design is not perfect. If you have a uber reliable, accurate gun that you love to shoot, keep it. Don't trade it for something "shiny."
